If you've dabbled in sewing, but would love to gain more confidence sewing your own knit clothing, then this workshop is for you. Knit shirts are a wardrobe staple, and sewing up a knit tee is a great way to start sewing with knits.
In this workshop choose the short or long-sleeved option and we'll all sew together going over each step.
THE PATTERN: We'll be working with the Jackson Tee and Pullover Pattern from Helen's Closet. We chose this one because it is a gender inclusive, relaxed fit pattern with wide size range. It includes options to sew a tee shirt, or a long sleeve pullover in two lengths. Helen's Closet also offers a free hoodie expansion pack.
DESCRIPTION: skills you'll learn in this workshop:
- Reading sewing patterns and size charts.
- Understanding important measurements for choosing the correct size.
- Laying out and cutting sewing patterns.
- Review of the terms and unique traits of knit fabrics.
- Review options for construction seams, topstitching and hems with knits and techniques for adding ribbing.
- Participants will have an opportunity to test techniques on their sewing machines and create samples to take home for reference. The group will also work through all the steps to sew their very own Tee or Pullover. This class is indented for a standard sewing machine with straight and zig-zag stitches; participants can also hop on one of our overlocker/sergers to try!
WHEN: This workshop is in two sessions:
- Session 1: Thursday March 12th 5:30-8:30pm
- Session 2: Thursday March 19th 5:30-8:30pm
- Please note there may be some homework sewing between sessions.
WHAT'S INCLUDED: The price of the workshop includes instruction, fabric, thread and the pattern. Please stop by the store about a week before class to pick from the selection of knits we'll be using so it can be prewashed before the first class. Participants will also receive a 15% discount for any additional fabric and notions purchased in-store during the workshop.
WHAT'S NOT: Participants are asked to bring their sewing machines. Please also bring all your personal sewing tools (seam ripper, snips, tape measure, etc).
OTHER INFO: Sewists must be comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine and have spent some time using their machine for simple projects. This class is suited for any sewist with a little experience under their belt!
Minimum age is 16 years.
*Please ensure your sewing machine is in good working order. We request that you bring all your machine accessories and manual.

Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes. Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist.
All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop.
The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers.
The workshop will require the use of sewing machines, pins, needles, irons, cutting tools (scissors and rotary cutters), etc. By your participation in any class, workshop, lesson, or workspace usage, you agree to release and hold harmless Former and Latter Fabrics, it’s instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result.
