Join us this fall as we work through all the techniques to sew up your very own barn coat! This workshop is for sewists who have some sewing experience and are looking to take on a more challenging project. 

PATTERN: In this workshop we will be working with the Barn Coat (view A) of Closet Core Patterns' Fowler Jacket. The Fowler Jacket is a utilitarian and gender-neutral dream. It is perfect for layering; Fowler is roomy and oversized with a boxy shape and a dropped shoulder, and features a two-piece sleeve and bandless collar. Finished with your choice of buttons or snap closure. Sizes XXS-6X

 DESCRIPTION: skills you'll learn in this workshop: 

  • Clean curved patch pocket techniques
  • Topstitching techniques
  • Sewing various fabric thicknesses 
  • Collar & Roll cuff construction

WHEN: This workshop is in three sessions:

  • Session 1: Thursday October 22th 5:30-8:30pm 
  • Session 2: Saturday October 24th 9:30am-4pm (0.5hrs for lunch)
  • Session 3: Saturday October 31st 9:30am-4pm (0.5hrs for lunch)
  • Please note there may be some homework sewing between sessions

WHAT'S INCLUDED: All participants will receive the digital pattern and a printed copy of the pattern. 

WHAT'S NOT: We have not included any of the fabric or supplies for this project so you can choose what you'd like. We will provide guidance for choosing appropriate fabric/supplies to participants. If you'd like to purchase your fabric/supplies at Former + Latter we are happy to offer a 15% discount. Participants will also need to bring their sewing machines* and accessories (don't forget your manual, power cord, pins and extra machine needles!). Please bring all you personal sewing tools (scissors, seam ripper, snips, tape measure, etc). 

OTHER INFO: Participants must have previous sewing experience in order to keep up with the pace of this class. This class is suited for sewists that have worked through simple garments independently. 

Minimum age is 16 years. 

*Please ensure your sewing machine is in good working order. We request that you bring all your machine accessories and manual.  

Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes.  Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist. 

All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop. 

The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers. 

The workshop will require the use of sewing machines, pins, needles, irons, cutting tools (scissors and rotary cutters), etc. By your participation in any class, workshop, lesson, or workspace usage, you agree to release and hold harmless Former and Latter Fabrics, it’s instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result.
