If you've dabbled in sewing, but would love to gain more confidence sewing your own clothing, then this workshop is for you. Knit tee shirts are a wardrobe staple, and sewing up a knit tee is a great way to start sewing with knits.
In this workshop choose the short or long-sleeved option and we'll all sew together going over each step.
THE PATTERN:
We'll be working with the Jackson Tee and Pullover Pattern from Helen's Closet. We chose this one because it is a gender inclusive, relaxed fit pattern with wide size range. It includes options to sew a tee shirt, or a long sleeve pullover in two lengths. Helen's closet also offers a free hoodie expansion pack.
DESCRIPTION: skills you'll learn in this workshop:
- Reading sewing patterns and size charts.
- Understanding important measurements for choosing the correct size.
- Laying out and cutting sewing patterns.
- Sewing a basic knit garment including techniques for working with knits. We'll go over options to sew on a standard domestic sewing machine or participants can hop on one of our overlocker/sergers as well.
WHEN: This class is in two sessions:
- Session 1: Thursday Feb 6th 6-9pm (Choosing size, cutting out pattern & fabric and getting started sewing if time permits).
- Session 2: Thursday Feb 13th 6-9pm (Sewing!!)
WHAT'S INCLUDED: The price of the workshop includes instruction, a $40 credit for fabric and notions. Please stop by the store about a week before class to pick your fabric so it can be prewashed before the first class. Participants will also receive a 15% discount for any additional fabric and notions purchased in-store during the workshop.
WHAT'S NOT: We have not included the pattern in the price as it is a digital sewing pattern and can be purchased directly from Helen's Closet. You may also already own it! Participants will also need to bring their sewing machines* and accessories (don't forget your manual, power cord, pins and extra machine needles!). Please bring all you personal sewing tools (seam ripper, snips, tape measure, etc).
OTHER INFO: Sewists must be comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine and have spent some time using their machine for simple projects. This class is suited for any sewist with a little experience under their belt!
Minimum age is 16 years. Maximum class size is 6 participants.
*Please ensure your sewing machine is in good working order. We request that you bring all your machine accessories and manual.

Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes. Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist.
All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop.
The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers.
The workshop will require the use of sewing machines, pins, needles, irons, cutting tools (scissors and rotary cutters), etc. By your participation in any class, workshop, lesson, or workspace usage, you agree to release and hold harmless Former and Latter Fabrics, it’s instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result.
