If you've dabbled in sewing, but would love to gain more confidence sewing your own clothing, then this workshop is for you. Woven shirts are a wardrobe staple, and sewing up a woven tee is a great way to start your me-made clothing journey.
In this workshop choose from two pattern options and we'll all sew them up together going over the aspects of each that are similar and demonstrating the techniques from each that make them unique.

PATTERN OPTIONS:
- Closet Core "Cielo" Top & Dress - This is a woven top pattern in feminine sizing. It has bust darts, faced or bias bound neckline finishes and two sleeve options. It also has a dress option. Please note for this workshop we will be sewing View A (short sleeve shirt).
- Merchant & Mills "The Tee Shirt" - This is a woven tee shirt in masculine sizing. It offers a combination of a woven fabric with a ribbing neck finish, a breast pocket and optional rolled up sleeves.
DESCRIPTION: skills you'll learn in this workshop:
- Reading sewing patterns and size charts.
- Understanding important measurements for choosing the correct size.
- Grading pattern between sizes.
- Laying out and cutting sewing patterns.
- Sewing three neckline options: Faced, bias bound and knit ribbing.
- Sewing darts.
- Setting in sleeve
- Creating a cuffed sleeve
- We also love to show participants ways they can 'hack' patterns so they can get more use out of them!
WHEN: This workshop is in two sessions:
- Session 1: Thursday February 12th 5:30-8:30pm
- Session 2: Thursday February 19th 5:30-8:30pm
- Please note there may be some homework sewing between sessions.
WHAT'S INCLUDED: The price of the workshop includes:
- Instruction.
- A $40 credit of for fabric and supplies.
- Please stop by the store about a week before class to pick some fabric so it can be prewashed before the first class. Participants will also receive a 15% discount for any additional fabric and notions purchased in-store during the workshop.
WHAT'S NOT: We have not included the pattern in the price as we may not have stock in the size needed. You may also already own the pattern! We do sell these patterns in the store, or you can buy pdf & paper versions online through the Merchant & Mills or Closet Core websites. Digital patterns will have to be printed in advance. You can print and tape them together or you can have the A0 or copyshop files printed locally. We use 'Put Down The Tape Pattern Printing'. You can contact them at putdownthetape@gmail.com
Participants will also need to bring their sewing machines* and accessories (don't forget your manual, power cord, pins and extra machine needles!). Please bring all you personal sewing tools (seam ripper, snips, tape measure, etc).
OTHER INFO: Sewists must be comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine and have spent some time using their machine for simple projects. This class is suited for any sewist with a little experience under their belt!
Minimum age is 16 years.
*Please ensure your sewing machine is in good working order. We request that you bring all your machine accessories and manual.
Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes. Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist.
All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop.
The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers.
The workshop will require the use of sewing machines, pins, needles, irons, cutting tools (scissors and rotary cutters), etc. By your participation in any class, workshop, lesson, or workspace usage, you agree to release and hold harmless Former and Latter Fabrics, it’s instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result.
