New to the world of sewing? Wondering what 'woven', 'grainline', or 'cut on fold' mean? What tools are useful? How do I thread a machine? Why is ironing so important? Then join Nicole (and Monique) for an evening of learning to help get your sewing journey started!
DESCRIPTION: Topics we'll cover in this workshop:
- Fabrics: Types, their traits and what works for various project types.
- Notions: What are they for? Review the most common categories/types and our must haves.
- Patterns: Printed, PDF, what's included, what to know, where to buy them, etc.
- Sewing Machines: How do they work? Basic settings and try your hand at sewing some seams.
- Construction: Seam allowances, stitch types and purpose-specific techniques.
- Pressing: The difference between unpressed and pressed, ironing tools, tips & tricks that can save your project from disaster!

DETAILS: Bring along a notebook, pencil or pen and we'll take care of the rest. No need to bring your machine, everyone will take turns trying out one of our trusty sewing machines! This class does not focus on sewing a specific project; instead it will provide the basic knowledge to help you start your first sewing projects!
Minimum age is 16 years. Maximum class size is 6 participants.
Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes. Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist.
All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop.
The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers.
The workshop will require the use of sewing machines, pins, needles, irons, cutting tools (scissors and rotary cutters), etc. By your participation in any class, workshop, lesson, or workspace usage, you agree to release and hold harmless Former and Latter Fabrics, it’s instructors, and employees from any and all claims and liability related to any accident that may arise as a result.
