Join us for this two evening class to sew your very own hat. This is a great project to hone your precision sewing skills and such a satisfying make! It is perfect for using up some of those pesky scraps, or upcycling some old pants/jeans, etc.
THE PATTERN:
We'll be working with the ALL CAPS 5 panel hat pattern from Minimalist Machinist. The pattern includes options for adult (56-60cm circumference), youth (53.5-57.5cm circumference) and kids (51-55cm circumference) sizes with three brim shapes and four back closure options. We've also created an optional traditional baseball hat add-on for the ALL CAPS pattern that participants can choose to work with as well (adult size only).
DESCRIPTION: skills you'll learn in this workshop:
- Reading sewing patterns.
- Laying out and cutting sewing patterns.
- All the steps included in sewing your very own hat, including working with interfacing, making your own biased tape, seam finishing techniques, sewing in a brim, back closure, and all the details to sew a professional looking hat!
WHEN: This class is in two sessions:
- Session 1: Thursday June 12th: 6-9pm (Cutting out pattern & fabric and getting started).
- Session 2: Thursday June19th: 6-9pm (Sew, sew, sew!)
WHAT'S INCLUDED: The price of the workshop includes instruction, brim insert, interfacing, and stay tape as well as back closure options for the group. We'll also include some handy materials for the group to make sewing precision projects easier like basting tape, custom pressing tailor's ham, glue sticks (and more). Participants will also receive a 15% discount for any additional fabric and notions purchased in-store during the workshop.
WHAT'S NOT:
- The pattern is a digital, print at home sewing pattern and can be purchased directly from Minimalist Machinist (https://minimalistmachinist.gumroad.com/).
- Fabric for the main body. We recommend fabrics that hold their shape, i.e. twill, denim, heavier linen, canvas. It is not suitable for lightweight, drapey fabrics. We'd also stay away from super heavy fabrics as working with on a small scale project may be challenging.
- A piece of fabric for the interior bias tape, sweatband (and underside of the brim if you want). This fabric should be lighter weight and is a perfect place to use up a fun fabric scrap in your stash!
- Participants will also need to bring their sewing machines* and accessories (don't forget your manual, all your machine feet, power cord, pins and extra machine needles!). Please bring all your personal sewing tools (seam ripper, snips, tape measure, etc).
OTHER INFO: Sewists must be comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine and have spent some time using their machine for simple to intermediate projects.
Minimum age is 16 years. Maximum class size is 6 participants.
*Please ensure your sewing machine is in good working order. We request that you bring all your machine accessories and manual.
Payment in full is required to book a spot in our workshop and due to the limited number of spaces available registration is non-refundable. Discounts cannot be applied to classes. Up to two weeks in advance of the workshop, participation can be transferred to another sewist.
All participants will be contacted by email one to two weeks prior to the workshop with all the necessary details for the workshop.
The workshop is located in our Brick and Mortar retail store and we ask all participants to be respectful of the space, equipment, other participants and shoppers.
